When people recognizes beauty as beauty, ugliness appears
When people recognizes good as goodness, evil appears.
~Tao De Ching, Chapter 2
Beauty and goodness, manifested from Tao, are positive and joyful expressions in our life, However, the behavioral expression of beauty and goodness must be derived from the origin of Tao. From human perspective, what is the origin of Tao? Consciousness is the origin of Tao, the center, the core, the invisible, and the formless. Because consciousness is pure, righteous, natural, persistence, all things derives from it would be beauty and goodness.
If the human behavioral expression is not derived from consciousness (Tao), due to intervention of ego, greed, judgement, the expression of beauty and goodness will deem to be ugly and evil. This is because the expression is not from genuine consciousness.
For example, a doctor’s duty is to provide treatment to a patient and this seems to be a great good deeds to fulfill. However, if his/her intention is not to cure the patient suffering, but to blackmail, take advantage of patient for extra money, sell extra pills or redundant treatments on to the patient, is this consider act of beauty?
A philanthropist, who donate large sum of money to charities with the intention to build up fame and reputation. Is the act considered good? Although the act and behavior appears be to beautiful and good, the intention is selfish and greed. The physiological syndrome of “to act to be praised, to behave to be rewarded.” are filled in the mind of most people, as we all wanted to be noticed, recognized, and rewarded. The problem lies on our intention. Before we act, does our intention come from our true consciousness.
The glamorous act from non-genuine intention to be recognized is already departed from the one’s true consciousness. Any act without deriving from consciousness, the act become un-natural, evil, and temporary. On the other hand, any act deriving from consciousness, the act will be holy, pure, righteous, and genuine.
A beautiful appearance may contain a corrupted essence. A charitable action maybe just a evil cover-up.
