
Lighting the lamps is the initial procedure for all Tao ceremonies, which include Daily Worship, Semimonthly Worship, Fruit Offering, Tao Blessing ceremony, Sutra recital, Special Occasion Greeting, Vegetarian Vows, Petition Worship, etc. Light represents brightness, purity, clarity, brilliant, and origin. Because the nature of light, it can’t be described in words. Just like the Creator of the infinite Universe, it can’t be spoken, yet many people have given many names due to different languages, different cultures, and different ethnicity, With awareness of deeper understanding, we know that all the name are referring to the same meaning: the Almighty Lord, the Universe, or the Tao.
So what does the the Lighting the Lamps and the Creator of the Universe has to do with us? We have been born and been created. Thus, we are the creation from the universe. Knowing where we come from is a profound question that we must ask ourselves. Do we know that our physical bodies hold the same essence as the Creator? Our souls derived from the Creator, thus, our souls are also similar to the Creator which can’t be spoken nor described. Furthermore, we are human and have physical bodies, thus, our characters, behaviors, and attitudes are all manifestation of our soul. Each one of us is a tiny universe which operate by itself. For example, when we inhale and exhale, we are breathing continuously. After we take a meal, our internal organ will process digested meal automatically from the moment we swallow . When we sleep at night, our bodies will continue to function even when we are not consciousness. Just as planets galaxy operate sun continuously, our physical bodies also operate and regulate by itself day and night. This is the evidence of we are also connected to the Creator.
The Eternal Lamp is the first lamp we need to light. Eternal Lamp is also called the Wu-Ji lamp, source lamp or the Mother Lamp. The Eternal lamp symbolizes the Creator of the Universe. Lighting the Eternal lamp reminds us that our souls also have the same essence as the Creator of the Universe, the Lord.
