The high is founded on low. The famous Great Wall in China was not built in high initially. Everything starts from ground zero. It started from the foundation below the ground level. Upon foundation was laid, then it was built from one brick at a time from ground up.
In the example of a tree, for the tree to grow tall, the roots must penetrate downward continuously. We can’t see the subtle growth of the root under the soil, however, we see the tree grow healthy from the prosperity of branches, leaves, and fruits. The growth of roots are invisible from our eyes, but the roots manifest their Tao thru appearance of trunk, branches, leaves, and the bearing of fruits. This is the humbleness of a tree thru its root. This is the Tao of Tree.
For us, if we want to be respected by other, we must look inward and exam ourselves. Being a small business owner, I understand Lao Zi’s teaching:”High and Low support each other.” Tao De Ching, Chapter 2. I try to show my humbleness. To communicate with my employee, I must lower my position to my employees’ level to hear their thoughts, feelings, comments, and complaints. In addition, to gain respect from them, I must constantly exam my character of being a boss so that I can gain trust and faith from my employees.
Matthew 5:5: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Being meek is humble under constraint. Being meek is not a fool. One understands to reach high, to be noble, or to be respected, one must lay low because everything must grow from ground zero.
