The feeling stayed with her as she walked along lakeside. She squatted down to drink. Seeing the beautiful image of herself in the mirror-like water gave her the idea of creating lives.
While looking at herself in a pool of water she grabbed a handful of mud. Nu Wa began forming the mud-clay figures. When she placed down the figures, she also gave each of them life. Soon all figures began to move, rose, sang and danced.
She made the female-figures first, as she made human in her image.
The figures even called her “Mama” and jumped up and down. Joyfully she molded another, and then another, and another. After making dozens of female figures, she began to made male figures. She worked so hard that her fingers grew sore. But still, the creation she molded were too few. Realizing this was a slow and tedious process how could they fill the broad world?
All the figures help her make a strand of rope/ivy so that she can use the rope to make more. Then, She dipped a long strand of rope/ivy into the pool of mud. Afterward, she lifted the rope, and she flew to the sky so that the mud can dripped widely and scatter from the rope and became human beings. Small brown dots of mud freely upon the lands of China. These dots of mud became people.
When she finished making humans, Nuwa taught them to use leaves to cover themselves, and to pick fruit to feed themselves, and to gather in the moonlight to rejoice in their lives. And this was the origin of humans. From then on human beings lived in the wonderful world, creating wealth, working with their hands, and leading happy and peaceful lives.
This was also a time when women were considered to be the stronger and more important/dominated figures in the families.
However, the happiness and prosperity did not last long. Deity of water (Gong Gong) had a fight with the Deity of fire (Zhu Rong).
Deity of Water (Gong Gong) fearing he would lose the fight smashed his head against the mythical Mount Buzhou不周山 which was a pillar holding up the sky. When the parts of the sky fell it caused the earth to crack. The crack caused created heavy flooding and forest fires.
Forest fire broke and drenched the woods and fields. The creatures from underground came out and began chasing the humans.
The wind rose and clouds layered across the sky. Thunder roared, as a sudden flash of lightning set the woods on fire. Animals fled in panic all around, but then half the sky fell off. There was a collapse of the northwest sky followed by gales, heavy rain, snow and hail. The water in the heavenly river poured straight down. The ground was about to be submerged in a flood. It was this catastrophe that caused the sun, moon, and stars to point towards the west. It caused all of the rivers to flow to the southwest. It caused the earth to lean towards the southeast and the sky lean towards the northeast.
Seeing her humans suffering, Nuwa’s heart broke. Immediately, Nuwa melted/produced the five different colored rocks. Using burned reeds she sealed up the land to stop the flooding . Next she cut reeds from the field and mixed them together with the stones, and then set fire to the reeds. The fire burned continuously for nine days and nights.
She raised a giant burning melted-rocks above her head and flew toward the hole. But the stream was so strong that Nuwa was flushed down with the rock. She raised the giant rock and jumped again, but the water again flushed the rock and Nuwa away from the hole. Nuwa was not discouraged. She picked up many beautiful stones from the rivers and lakes, and sealed them up in the sky. She kept mending and filling for seven days and nights and finally, the big hole was fixed. (The different colors of the stones are what causes the rainbow in the sky after it rains.)
She requested a divine giant turtle and used its legs as pillars(poles) to hold up the sky.
She then use a dragon and scared all the creatures and beasts away from the land.
Now that her people were safe, Nuwa exhausted lay down to die. Another version is that Nu Wa herself went up and used her body to seal the opening in the sky, sacrificing herself. The sun shone again after the rain, and colorful clouds floated in the sky. Nuwa was burned all over her body. The heroic goddess overcame an especially big disaster. The people were finally saved. All heaven and earth celebrated together. Thus began the golden age of living in harmony, and all enjoying a good and prosperous life. Bearing their harvests, they thanked Nuwa. A thunder-chariot, drawn by flying dragon, bore the Goddess up to the clouds and beyond, toward the ninth heaven.
